ENGLISH BULL JUDGE NATIONAL TERRIER 15 Bull Terriers Always a pleasure to judge this breed with its unique ways & character, quite a challenge physically as they are so strong & athletic. Show training is not high on the agenda for Bull Terrier exhibitors & many took some time to settle down to something like a normal trot. They were all good natured & energetic, so with a bit of patience we got there eventually. Some of the classes were a bit thin on the ground & lacking quality. The bitches generally were of better quality & type, mouths weren’t too bad but several had poor feet. Gay tails on the move were fairly common & spoils the finished picture. But the worst today was the dreaded clown paint which you can’t even wipe off. My suit went straight to the dry cleaners & my hands were white & greasy, horrible stuff. There is nothing wrong with chalk if used properly & brushed out. Driving home I passed White Waltham Place & the famous kennels on the other side of the road. Recalling so many happy times going to the trophy shows, visiting Mr Oppenheimer at home, taking overseas friends to see the dogs & puppies. That was such a different world & it started me thinking of all those clever old breeders no longer with us. I can remember like yesterday judging my first ever veteran stakes class at an all breed ch show where a lot of famous dogs from a cross section of breeds were entered. Although a bit stiff in movement & with a few missing teeth, there he was, Ch Abraxas Audacity, still with that Bull Terrier swagger & true magnetism – he gave me the look, that piercing glint that no other breed possesses & of course he won. You never forget moments like that. MPD (0). PD (2,1a) 1 BP, Emett’s Brookbully Avenger, 11 months white, good prospect for the future, long well filled head, small dark eyes giving good expression, well carried ears, well proportioned with good spring of rib, excellent front & feet, typical movement. Could show with a bit more concentration but I really liked this puppy for type & conformation. JD (1) 1 Sheehy’s Cigano Dark Knight for Afanbull, 14 months, masculine head, completely filled, excellent mouth, good bone & substance. Coat could have had a bit more gloss & finish. Muscular neck, well muscled quarters. Not the most enthusiastic of movers but sound enough. PGD (4) 1 Leggat’s Rabram Royal Star, 19 months, decent youngster in excellent form, I liked his head & strong body, held his topline on the move, well carried tail, steady showman. Moved OK, good coat; 2 Roff’s Bobuddy Bronn, 19 months white, carrying plenty of weight today. Strong head with good fill, expressive eyes, well muscled. Not moving as well as 1 in front. Good bone, well handled; 3 Taylor’s Ragnarok Fjalar. LD (6) I thought this was a difficult class. 1 Wannop’s Off The Charts at Charishalee, good looking white of 2 years, shapely body & overall proportions, typical head & expression, strong & fit with good muscletone, free mover. Feet could be better; 2 Talbot’s Aricon Eyecon, 20 months eye of quality, short back, good outline, clean & well presented, good head but soft ear detracts from expression. Well developed quarters, arched neck of good length, moved & showed well; 3 Evans’ Bronygarn Bold As Brass. OD (6,2) 1 CC & BOB, Mathison’s Ch Blazinbullys Dark Knight, 2½ years, classy young dog with everything in the right place. Lovely head, completely filled & with great profile, small dark eyes, well carried ears which is where he scored over 2. Good bone, legs & feet, compact body, excellent topline, has that superior ring presence that makes you notice him; 2 RCC, Blair’s Megaville Higher Ground, I loved his movement which had that typical gait unique to this breed with a jaunty confident air, great shape, bone & substance, full of personality & his own style. Well filled head of good length & strength, broad chest, well rounded fit body; 3 Richmond’s Blazinbullys Mr Notorious of Waymoat. MPB (1) A. PB (1) 1 McCall & Britton’s Langville’s The I Ching, 9 months, needs more bone & better feet. Very babyish & still has a long way to go. Needs to improve in movement & topline. Feminine head, showed with focus. JB (5) 1 Coverdale’s Unionbul’s Diamond Flame, 16 months white, easy winner here I thought. Well proportioned & balanced, excellent type with good bone, pleasing head with good fill & profile, expressive eyes, arched neck, clean & well turned out, strong body, composed showgirl. Moved well; 2 Mills’ Miinroc Envy Me, 17 months r/w, showy & cooperative, hard fit body, splendid coat & muscletone, attractive head, firm topline. Gay tail on the move spoils overall impression. Well handled; 3 Inwood & Price’s Ukusa Jubilation at Bedivare. PGB (8,2) 1 O’Connell’s Koellen Penny Black, 22 months, lots to like about this coloured bitch who had a comfortable win here. Beautifully proportioned, strong body, clean outline, steady as a rock, typical head, neat ears, eyes full of expression, excellent coat & condition, well handled to look her best, moved well; 2 Moore’s My Book Of Dreams, 2 years, well schooled showgirl in hard fit condition, good head, shade long cast, well muscled quarters, moved with style & confidence; 3 Thomas’ Bronygarn Bobbys Girl at Mostahbull. LB (3,2) 1 Malden’s Louka Frosty Lady, stood alone here. Lively 3 years white, strong built with typical head & expression, well carried ears, held her topline on the go round, showed well. Failed in feet. OB (14,1) What a class, a ring full of good bitches, really made my day. In the end it became a battle between 1 & 2, a close contest but I was impressed with the whole line up of 5. 1 CC, Seydewitz’s VDH Anneliese Vom Welpersberg, exactly 2 years white, commanded attention from the moment she entered the ring. Great silhouette & attitude, quality head with good fill & finish, wicked small eyes, totally in tune with her handler, good neck & quarters, easy mover, firm body & topline. This was her 2nd CC I was told, her 3rd won’t be far away; 2 RCC, Hicks’ Bullyon Love Unmeasured for Crisalia, 3 years, lovely bitch, well constructed, sound & shapely, arched neck, well balanced head, typical expression, moved well, firm topline, well muscled quarters. Handler just couldn’t keep her focused & she got fidgety & panty at the end; 3 Wilson & Stephens’ Alizarin Sugar Babe. LIZ CARTLEDGE |
