ENGLISH BULL JUDGE EAST OF ENGLAND 10
East of England Championship Show July 10, 2010
Bull Terriers
A lovely day, an excellent showground, with tenting over the rings to keep out the sun – and this was needed, plus a challenging entry. I checked the comments I made on Bullies at the UK champ show I judged a couple of years ago and they are much the same for today’s entry: top class heads, dark eyes, generally good bites, ample bone and I would add super temperaments.
However I also wrote: ‘The biggest challenge facing breeders appears to be shoulders, which are in a sorry state.
Very few are well laid back and really short upper arms are widespread – with all of the resultant consequences.’
If anything shoulders are now worse.
The shoulder blade and upper arm should be equal in length; yet short upper arms were the norm. The angle between these two bones should be perhaps 110-120 degrees (not the unrealistic 90 degrees proposed by the late Tom Horner); again few if any exhibits were in the range.
Raymond Oppenheimer used to keep us focused on “make and shape”.
Post Raymond it’s up to us as breeders and judges; take heed.
My thanks to the sporting exhibitors and congratulations to the winners.
Puppy Dog 1
1. Martin & Hirst’s Bullyview Moment of Madness: White with br eye patches; still some maturing to do; decent head with good Roman finish and keen expression – ears right on top; could have a stronger muzzle; shapely body for his age; well muscled and well let down behind; moved better going than coming.
Junior Dog 2
1. Blair’s Megaville Its a Crime: Big white dog, bl/br ears, with huge bone; decent length of head with a Roman finish, a correct bite and keen, dark eyes; not much angulation fore or aft; well muscled rear with short hocks; rather lazy on the move indicating his laid back approach to life; nicely handled.
2. Bennett’s Aldamar Power Storm: Well balanced dog, bl/br with white collar; smaller than #1; head nicely turned with correct bite and dark eyes; again could have better angulation; moved satisfactorily.
Novice Dog 1
1. Musgrove’s Ilegend Lord of the Vikings: Larger bl/br with a dramatic turn and finish to his head; correct bite, typical expression; good substance for his size; decent bone; pasterns could be stronger; a little more length of leg would improve his balance.
Post Graduate Dog 2
1. Morgans’ Marchelsea Trouble Coming at Romagna: Well proportioned white with bl/br ears; nice enough head, though ideally I would like more length and strength of muzzle; moved much better than his competitor; showed really well.
2. Kocaba’s Badlesmere Berties Brother: Solid bl/br with quite a good head; uses his ears well; quality bone and good depth of chest; movement rather uncoordinated; not very happy in the ring today.
Limit Dog 5 (2 abs)
1. Lamonby’s Emred Daredevil: Attractive medium-sized white carrying bl/br; masculine head, well filled and of good depth; ears up on top – he uses them well; bite correct apart from a missing incisor; good bone for his size with a compact body; shapely, well muscled hindquarters; moved with power going away, a tad loose in topline from the side; the best mover in this class; sparkling showman, beautifully handled; pressed hard for the reserve ticket.
2. Hollindrake’s Activior Grand Finale for Bulian: Brindle with a strong head and correct bite; adequate bone, well sprung ribs; moderate angulation fore and aft; covers the ground reasonably well, rather untidily in front.
3. Buckby’s Benjip Gentle Ben of Skjaldmarr:
Open Dog 7 (2 abs)
1. Ley’s Virtuous Brute Force by Fortifier: Bl/br with a long, strong head, gently turned with a good Roman finish; correct bite; keen expression with well placed ears; clean, well laid shoulders (much better than his closest rivals in this regard), straight front, good reach of neck and shapely body; decent bent of stifle; all nicely balanced; moved well from all angles with just a hint of looseness in topline; showed and presented beautifully to take the ticket with some to spare. CC (I was told later this is his third and qualifying CC – congratulations to his owner-handler)
2. Blakeley’s Am Ch Skyline Defies Dazlin: Striking red/white dog, compact and well balanced; strong, well filled head with a keen expression; quality bone, good spring of rib and correct backline; in really hard condition, he moved purposefully – if rather untidily in front; showed alertly. RCC
3. Howes & Sheppard’s Ragnarok Balder at Polanca:
Puppy Bitch 1
1. Richardson’s Dajan Gold Medal for Quayardson: Quality white with bl/br ear patches; nice feminine head with correct bite; eye a little open; decent bone, straight front and shapely body for her age; could be shorter in back; well let down behind; sets herself up nicely; movement “puppy” loose. BP
Junior Bitch 1
1. McGregor’s Merlindan Belisma: Typy red bitch with a well filled and turned head; lovely neck and among the best shoulders here today; decent bone, pasterns need to strengthen; shapely body and hindquarters; wanted to play and so difficult to assess movement.
Post Graduate Bitch 2
1. Lambert’s Ebullient Ebony Girl: Bl/br girl, who shows herself superbly; nice feminine head – perhaps a bit “wedgy” in shape; enough bone for her size; ample rib cage; one of the better movers today, a little close behind.
2. Tate & Wood’s Bediveres Frozen Ice: White with black ear patches; nice head with keen dark eyes and correct bite; enough bone; good topline, though a tad long in back; she was stressed today and not at her best.
Limit Bitch 4 (1 abs)
1. Phillip’s LLanwenarth Love No Measure of Bullyon: Elegant, upstanding white bitch, carrying br; lovely feminine head, turned and filled; correct bite and keen expression; adequate bone, straight front plus clean shoulders; could spring some in rib; best mover in this class; showed really well. RCC
2. Martin’s Caliber Hoss Play: There’s a lot to like about this br/w bitch; gorgeous head and expression; lovely profile, muzzle wide and deep; bite just off; excellent bone; compact body, undercarriage spoilt by a recent litter; well let down behind; moved strongly, beautifully presented.
3. Martin & Hirst’s Yungwood Sweet Enchantment at Santini:
Open Bitch 3 (1 abs)
1. Blakeley’s Dazlin Sensation: Compact white (br ears) excelling in type and quality; lovely head, turned and filled; dark eyes and well set ears; decent bone, feet could be tighter; clean shoulders with better lay back than her nearest rivals; shapely body with well sprung ribs; powerful hindquarters; moved and showed really well to take CC and BOB.
2. Hill’s Arcanum Kontinental Blend: The kind of sturdy, honest br/w bitch you would expect to excel in the whelping box; well filled head without exaggeration; correct bite; good bone and shapely body; strong, wide hindquarters; covered the ground quite well if not enthusiastically; well presented.
